A long-term housing solution for society’s most vulnerable.

Let’s break the pattern of homelessness, hospital stays and incarceration.

Learn more about the problem

Sydney has as many as 1,000 people with chronic mentally illness sleeping in the open every night. The Habilis supported housing model has been set up to change this.

Habilis is a registered charity dedicated to providing long-term, low-cost supported housing for people living with chronic mental illness, mainly schizophrenia.

Our first centre at Summer Hill provides a safe and supportive environment designed to break the cycle of homelessness, hospital re-admission and incarceration.

A home for life, not shelter for the short-term.

The Habilis model is purpose-built small-scale clusters of self-contained units, together with the clinical care and social support needed for residents to remain well and maintain tenancy.

Support services are funded by rent taken from the Disability Support Pension and Commonwealth Rent Assistance, NDIS packages obtained for the residents, and contributions in kind by family members and volunteers. Visiting psychiatrists and mental health nurse practitioners are funded by Medicare, at no cost to residents.

The Habilis model is for purpose-built small clusters of units, sufficient in scale to provide a suitable level of service and social support to help residents stay well and maintain their tenancy, but small enough for residents to feel safe and that they are part of a community.

Our goal is to open more Habilis Centres to address the pressing need for this kind of care. Support us and Sydney’s homeless mentally ill by making a tax-deductible donation today, or contact us to discuss partnership opportunities.
