The Habilis value proposition
The City of Sydney estimates the sanitation cost alone of rough sleepers to be about $30,000 each p.a., almost enough to cover housing costs. With the average cost of a night in a general hospital bed around $2,000, a psychiatric hospital bed around $1,200, and a night in prison $300, we estimate our first sixteen residents generated a staggering $4.3 million dollars of institutional care in the year prior to living at Habilis. Putting aside the moral duty to provide care, the cost of neglecting the homeless mentally ill is greater than the cost of good care.
