Resident stories - Anthony

Yet another example of how quickly life can take a turn for vulnerable people, Anthony became homeless after his grandparents passed away. With no choice but to live on the streets, he slept in front of the NSW State Library for over 6 months with a small community of homeless people who looked out for each other in the interests of greater safety. As part of this group, he attended Matthew Talbot Hostel for meals, and was referred to their clinic where he received treatment for diabetes. It became apparent that he required treatment with an antipsychotic medication. Whilst he took some convincing to take it, the medication proved to be transformative, and we were pleased to offer Anthony his own unit at Habilis Summer Hill.

It hasn’t been a straightforward residency, and highlights the need for ongoing supervision and care of varying levels for our 20 or so residents. Anthony has a tendency to hoard food and belongings, and needs constant help to keep his unit clean. Our onsite supervisors and clinic staff continue to help Anthony with these challenges. However, he reports being very happy with the security of his own unit and the daily support we can provide at Habilis.
